Amazon E-Book Sales Contract Dispute

Thursday 19 Jun 2014

With many of the cases I work on surrounding contract disputes, I am always interested in finding negotiations that hit the national scene. Over the past couple of months, digital marketplace Amazon has been in a heated quarrel with Hachette, a major publisher and e-book distributor.

While Amazon’s customer-centric attitude has long been appreciated by buyers worldwide, many investors are now pushing for more aggressive and consistent growth on the company’s behalf. After Amazon’s request to receive a higher percentage of e-book sale profits was not well received by Hachette, the company stopped pre-order sales of the publisher’s most popular upcoming releases.

Many of Amazon’s biggest e-book competitors like Apple and Barnes & Noble have jumped on the opportunity to snag some new customers due to this contract dispute. Both retailers have opened up pre-orders, but it’s unclear if they have directly teamed up with Hachette. With Amazon claiming their reputation has not taken much of a hit from the brawl, it doesn’t look like negotiations will be letting up any time soon.
