Miami Herald “My View”

Monday 27 Jul 2015

An article I recently contributed to the Miami Herald was published as this week’s “My View” column in the Business Monday section. This is my second time contributing to the column, and I am always delighted to be able to speak directly to the many talented business owners in Miami, many personal friends, and offer some timely business advice from a legal standpoint.

This article focuses on hourly wages versus salary. With the recent controversy about Uber drivers and employment status in the news, I thought it would be a good time to make business owners aware of the rules and regulations set in place for employees when it comes to compensation. It is critical for employers to be knowledgeable on the ins-and-outs of salaried versus hourly wages to avoid potentially getting into unnecessary legal trouble.

This means being familiar with Florida’s “wages and hours” laws, fully grasping the individual duties of each position in your company as well as the economics of your industry, and promptly addressing any issues that might cause your company to be in noncompliance.
